Marvel Pushes Avengers Releases to December
Marvel fans will have to wait a little longer for the next big team-ups. Disney has confirmed that Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars have both been delayed by several months.
New Release Dates:
-
Avengers: Doomsday – December 18, 2026
-
Avengers: Secret Wars – December 17, 2027
The studio originally planned to release these films in May of each respective year. Now, they’ll hit theaters during the holiday season, which has proven to be a strong box office window—especially after Spider-Man: No Way Home earned nearly $2 billion globally during a December release.
Why the Delay?
According to insiders, both films are massive productions with huge casts and ambitious storylines. Marvel Studios wants to make sure everything is done right, which means more time for production, VFX, and post-production.
Disney CEO Bob Iger also recently shared that Marvel had been making too much content too fast, which led to a dip in quality. The new plan is to slow down and focus on making fewer, better films.

Fewer MCU Movies in 2026 and 2027
With these delays, Marvel has also scaled back its overall film release schedule. In 2026, only two major MCU films are expected to hit theaters:
Upcoming Marvel Releases:
-
Fantastic 4: First Steps – July 25, 2026
-
Spider-Man: Brand New Day (Sony/Marvel) – TBD 2026
-
Avengers: Doomsday – December 18, 2026
-
Avengers: Secret Wars – December 17, 2027
That means there will be over a one-year gap between Fantastic Four and Doomsday—the longest break in MCU history since the post-COVID gap between Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) and Black Widow (2021).
Marvel has also removed several “Untitled Marvel” placeholders from its release calendar and replaced them with “Untitled Disney” projects. There are still potential 2028 dates saved for future Marvel films.
Disney’s Other Big Announcements
Marvel wasn’t the only franchise making headlines. Disney also announced dates for some other major films coming soon:
The Dog Stars – March 27, 2026
Directed by Ridley Scott, this post-apocalyptic drama stars Jacob Elordi as a pilot surviving in a world devastated by a pandemic. He sets out on a dangerous journey with his dog, looking for hope and human connection. The cast also includes Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin, Guy Pearce, and Benedict Wong.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 – May 1, 2026
Meryl Streep returns as Miranda Priestly in this long-awaited sequel. The story will explore the decline of print media and how Runway magazine adapts in the digital age. Emily Blunt and Anne Hathaway are expected to return, though casting is yet to be officially confirmed.
Avatar: The Way of Water – IMAX/3D Re-release on October 3, 2025
To build hype for Avatar: Fire and Ash (releasing December 19, 2025), James Cameron’s previous film is getting a high-resolution re-release.
What This Means for the MCU
Delaying Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars may be frustrating for fans, but it's likely a smart move long-term. Marvel is clearly resetting its strategy: fewer films, more quality. With Robert Downey Jr. returning in a new role and a stacked cast of fan-favorites, the wait might be well worth it.
